It belongs to the family of Unix-like operating system based on the Linux kernel, its source code can be freely used, modified and distributed. One of the most popular operating system in the world.

The first version of the Linux kernel was released to the public on September 17, 1991. System Tools known as "Development Kit", and libraries from the GNU project are included with the kernel to provide a usable operating system. For this reason, an alternative name for the complete system was created: GNU/Linux.

One of the uses of Linux is server environments, for which commercial support is offered by computer companies such as IBM, Oracle, Dell, Microsoft, HP, Red Hat and Novell. Linux is installed on a variety of computer hardware, such as desktop computers, supercomputers and embedded systems such as mobile phones, routers and televisions. The main Linux server distribution is Ubuntu. Android is built on top of the Linux kernel, which means it uses Linux as its core component.

Thanks to knowledge of Linux and its terminal, we can for ex. install server software on it, such as Apache or Nginx, write automatically running scripts, set CRON, or even configure various additional software.
